Eight Manufacturers Recall Pool and In-Ground Spa Drain Covers Due to Possible Entrapment Hazardous to Swimmers
This past summer, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with eight manufacturers, announced a voluntary recall of pool and spa drain covers. The recalled drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers. About 1 million drain covers are subject to this recall.
Contact Manufacturer for a Replacement
Abbey’s Hope strongly urges public pool or spa owners/operators and consumers who have their own residential pool or spa and who have one of the recalled pool/spa drain covers to immediately contact the manufacturer to receive a replacement. Please note that except for kiddie pools, wading pools and in-ground spas, retrofit or replacement of installed covers are not required in pools with multiple drain systems or gravity drainage systems or for covers installed before December 19, 2008.
The recall involves various pool and spa drain covers that can be identified by the manufacturers’ name and model information listed below.
What you should do?
If you think your pool may have a recalled drain cover:
1. Contact your pool or spa service provider and ask them if your drain covers are subject to the recall. The manufacturer links above have photos of the dangerous covers;
2. Never remove a drain cover yourself. If your drain cover is subject to the recall, call your pool or spa professional. They have the proper expertise for a safe removal. You will be reimbursed by the drain cover manufacturer for reasonable costs for replacement.
3. Do not use the pool or spa until the recalled drain cover is replaced. This is a good opportunity to remind children to ALWAYS stay away from pool and spa drains.
