The Forest Park Pool is now compliant with the 2008 Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.

"Due to the age of the pool and the odd size of the main drain, we had to fabricate a drain cover to fit," Spear Corporation, Roachdale, representative Ben Fuchs said. "The fact that the pool is aluminum makes it more difficult."

Because of the large volume of drain covers and the amount of pools that were required to be compliant, Spear Corporation, was unable to perform the required changes to the pool before the usual opening, which pushed the date back. The Department of Health signed a waiver, which allowed the pool to open for the season.

Brazil City Parks Board President Ruthann Jeffries believes only 30 percent of Indiana pools were compliant with the law at the beginning of the swimming season and she is now pleased that the Forest Park Pool is now compliant.

"We are very excited that next year when the pool opens we will be compliant with the federal law," she said. "But both (Supt. of Parks) Bill Houck and I feel that every swimmer that was in the pool this summer was safe."

Though an exact figure is not known, Jeffries believes the drains will cost approximately $10,000. The law requires the installation of anti-entrapment drain covers and other safety systems in all public pools.

The law was enacted due to the drowning of Virginia Graeme Baker, who is the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker.

"We did our best to get into compliance as fast as we could," Houck said. "We are just relieved the pressure is off."

Both Houck and Jeffries thank the state and local board of health for allowing them to open this year.

The Dragonfly Story

Excerpted from the eulogy at Abbey Taylor's Celebration of Life Service

Below the surface of a quiet pond lived a colony of water bugs. They were happy, living far from the sun. But they noticed that occasionally, a member of their colony would climb up a lily stalk and disappear from sight, never to return. Where do you suppose she went? wondered a water bug.
